Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 13, 2026
1. Who We Are
StopALPR.ca is a community advocacy campaign seeking to prevent private companies from installing and operating automated licence plate recognition (“ALPR”) cameras that monitor public streets and neighbourhoods in Toronto.
This website and campaign are operated by Pete Maropakis, a private citizen of Toronto. Questions about this Privacy Policy or our handling of personal information may be directed to [info@stopalpr.ca or another monitored address].
2. Information We Collect
When you sign the petition, we may collect:
-
Your first and last name;
-
Your email address;
-
Your postal code, if you choose to provide it;
-
The date and time you signed; and
-
Limited technical information used to operate the website, prevent duplicate or fraudulent signatures, and maintain security.
Your postal code is optional unless clearly identified otherwise on the petition form.
Our website provider and other service providers may automatically collect information such as your IP address, browser type, device information and cookie data. More information about these services is provided below.
3. Why We Collect This Information
We collect this information to:
-
Record and verify support for the Stop ALPR petition;
-
Identify and remove duplicate or fraudulent submissions;
-
Determine the general geographic distribution of petition support;
-
Compile petition totals and summary statistics;
-
Present the petition and evidence of public support to Toronto City Council, City staff, elected officials and other relevant public bodies;
-
Send you confirmation or essential information concerning your signature; and
-
Send campaign news and updates only if you separately agree to receive them.
We will not use petition information for unrelated commercial purposes.
4. Information Shared With Public Officials
We may provide the petition, including signers’ names and postal codes where supplied, to Toronto City Council, City staff, elected officials, committees or other relevant public bodies for the purpose of demonstrating public opposition to privately operated ALPR surveillance.
We do not intend to include your email address in the petition materials provided to public officials. Email addresses will be used for verification, administration and communications to which you have consented.
Petitions and communications submitted to the City may become part of a public record. This means that a signer’s name—and potentially other information included in the submitted petition—could be accessible to the public. Once information has been submitted to a public body, that organization will control its copy according to its own legal obligations, policies and retention requirements. We may not be able to alter or remove information from that copy.
By signing the petition, you consent to the submission of your name and any other information clearly identified beside the petition form as information that will be shared.
5. Campaign Emails
Signing the petition does not automatically subscribe you to general campaign or promotional emails.
If you separately choose to receive campaign updates, we may email you about:
-
The progress or outcome of the petition;
-
Relevant City meetings or decisions;
-
Significant developments concerning private ALPR deployment; and
-
Related opportunities to participate in the Stop ALPR campaign.
You may unsubscribe at any time by using the unsubscribe link in an email or by contacting us at info@stopalpr.ca. Unsubscribing from updates will not remove a signature that has already been submitted as part of the petition.
6. When We Share Information
We may share personal information:
-
With City officials and public bodies as described above;
-
With service providers that help us host the website, collect petition submissions, store information, send email or maintain security;
-
When required by law, court order or another lawful authority; or
-
When reasonably necessary to investigate fraud, abuse or a security incident.
Our current service providers may include Wix, Google Workspace, [identify your petition/form provider], and [identify any email or analytics provider]. These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies and may store or process information outside Canada.
We do not sell or rent personal information.
7. Cookies and Analytics
StopALPR.ca may use essential cookies required for website operation and security. If analytics, advertising pixels or non-essential cookies are used, the site will identify them and provide any consent choices required by applicable law.
We will not state that the website collects only names and email addresses if Wix, analytics tools or other services also collect technical information.
8. Retention and Deletion
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary to operate and verify the petition, communicate its results and meet applicable legal or administrative requirements.
Unless a longer period is legally required, we intend to delete or anonymize information retained solely by StopALPR.ca no later than 12 months after the campaign’s final petition submission or conclusion.
This retention period does not apply to copies already provided to the City or another public body.
9. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including limiting access to those who need it for the campaign.
However, no website, email system or electronic storage method can be guaranteed to be completely secure. We will respond appropriately if we become aware of unauthorized access, use or disclosure.
10. Access, Correction and Withdrawal
You may contact us to:
-
Ask what personal information we hold about you;
-
Request a correction;
-
Withdraw consent to future campaign emails; or
-
Request deletion of information that remains under our control.
Withdrawal or deletion may not be possible after petition information has been submitted to a public official, entered into a public record, or retained where legally required.
Requests may be sent to info@stopalpr.ca. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
11. Children
This petition is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16 without the consent of a parent or legal guardian. If you believe a child has submitted information, please contact us.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the campaign or its service providers change. The current version will be posted on this page with its effective date. Material changes affecting how previously collected information is used or disclosed will be communicated where reasonably possible.
